The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor (EMHRM) is an NGO established in Switzerland in November 2011. It is not associated with EuroMed Rights, another NGO co-funded by the European Union, though they are occasionally mistaken for one another.
EMHRM’s stated mission is to champion freedom throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Its goals include: “Elevate the awareness of and appreciation for human rights law in the countries of the region”, “Leverage international law to hold accountable perpetrators of human rights violations” “Provide a helping hand to local institutions for the implementation of joint projects”, “Stimulate international and European human rights organizations and decision makers to focus on particular violations”, “Highlight the challenges facing marginalized populations”, “Encourage the use of peaceful and legal channels to expose the perpetrators of human rights violations, including parties that impede the work of jurists”.
However, EMHRM is alleged to have connections with the Palestinian group Hamas. Organizations like NGO Monitor and UN Watch, which oppose the delegitimization of Israel, criticize EMHRM for ignoring human rights abuses committed by Hamas and focusing excessively on Israel. EMHRM frequently accuses the Israeli military of committing “genocide” in Gaza.
Additionally, EMHRM's current president, Ramy Abdu, a finance expert of Gazan origin, has been identified since 2020 by the Israeli Ministry of Defense as working for a Hamas front organization called "I Palestine - International Platform of NGOs Working for Palestine." On October 7 and 8, 2023, he celebrated Hamas' terrorist attack on Israeli civilians on social media [here]. He also denied the well-documented reports of Hamas sexually assaulting Israeli women on October 7, dismissing these accounts as "fabricated lies" [archive].
