ANTISEMITISM. Donald Trump. Tucker Carlson. Elon Musk. Nick Fuentes. Kanye West. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Candace Owens: The antisemitic revolution that has been unfolding on the American right since 2015 continues to gain ground by the day. Conspiratorial thinking is neither new to American politics nor confined to one end of the ideological spectrum. But Trump has made foundational what was once marginal. From birtherism to election denialism, he turned anti-establishment conspiracism into a litmus test for power. A movement that legitimizes crackpot schemes about rigged voting machines and microchipped vaccines cannot simply turn around and draw the line at the Jews. For mercenary opportunists like broadcaster Tucker Carlson, this moment holds incredible promise. But for Republicans with principles—those who know who won the 2020 election, or who was the bad guy in World War II, and can’t bring themselves to say otherwise—it’s a time of profound peril. And for Jews, the targets of one of the world’s deadliest conspiracy theories, such developments are even more foreboding (Source: Yair Rosenberg in The Atlantic, September 23, 2024).

J.D. VANCE. Three days after Tucker Carlson posted his Hitler apologetics, J.D.Vance shrugged off the controversy and recorded an interview with him. Last Saturday, the two men yukked it up onstage at a political event in Pennsylvania before an audience of thousands. Such coziness should not surprise, given that Carlson was reportedly instrumental in securing the vice president slot for the Ohio senator. Asked earlier if he took issue with Carlson’s decision to air the Holocaust revisionism, Vance retorted: “The fundamental idea here is Republicans believe not in censorship; we believe in free speech and debate.” He conveniently declined to use his own speech to debate Carlson’s (Source: The Atlantic, September 23, 2024).

TUCKER CARLSON. “The conspiracies Tucker Carlson embraces and advances are hardly intended to empower his listeners. Rather, they are what cynics in the TV business used to call “boob bait.” Did aliens build the pyramids? Do “Zionists” control Congress by assigning “minders” to each individual member of Congress? Were Adolf Hitler’s intentions mostly or entirely peaceable, until he got suckered into World War II by Winston Churchill? Is the “deep state” pumping money into Ukraine in order to fund its fentanyl business through Goldman Sachs? Do nephilim from the Bible walk among us here on earth?”. David Samuels on why Tucker Carlson became America’s conspiracist-in-chief, and the difference between “good” and “bad” conspiracies (Source: The Tablet, September 25, 2024).

ALEX JONES. The conspiracy theorist’s Infowars media platform and its assets will be sold off piece by piece in auctions to help pay the nearly $1.5 billion he owes relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, about whom he peddled conspiracy theories for years. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez said he will soon approve the order for Infowars’ intellectual property to go to auction on Nov. 13, including its websites, social media accounts, trademarks and copyrighted material. Jones vows to continue his talk shows through other means, possibly including a new website and his personal social media accounts. He also has suggested that Infowars’ assets could be bought by his supporters, allowing him to continue hosting his show as an employee under the Infowars brand in their home city of Austin, Texas (Sources: AP, September 25, 2024; MSNBC, September 25, 2024).

FOX NEWS. Fox News' Vivek Ramaswamy, the failed candidate for the Republican nomination for US president, called Alex Soros “the puppet master pulling the strings” behind the Democratic Party. Soros is the head of the Soros Foundation, established by his father billionaire George Soros. The Soros men, who are Jewish, have been the target of internationally circulated antisemitic conspiracy theories claiming they are trying to control the world through their philanthropic activities and financial speculation (Source: Media Matters for America, September 25, 2024).

WAFFENKRAFT. Alexandre Gilet, a former volunteer police officer from Grenoble, France, was sentenced on appeal to 18 years' imprisonment for criminal association to commit terrorist acts. The sentencing followed the trial of four far-right figures charged with having devised a terror plot targeting Jewish sites and mosques. Their group chat uncovered by police, was named “Operation WaffenKraft” in a nod to the Waffen-SS - the military branch of the Nazi’s elite SS corps, which was founded by Adolf Hitler. The chat group discussed targets, including mosques as well as the headquarters of the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions (CRIF) and the office of the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism (LICRA) (Sources: Libération, September 19, 2024; Le Parisien, September 23, 2024; AFP, June 19, 2023).
